Content providers and user testing

Dr. Robert Sands (UCD School of Archaeology)

Robert Sands brings two complimentary skill sets to the SHARE I.T. team. Primarily he has a qualified background in Archaeology and in recent years has been involved in several archaeological research projects which have included spatial data collection and analysis components. Secondly, his current as role as IT specialist at UCD and previous positions in Media and Learning Technology Service (MALTS) have enabled him to gain considerable experience in the research and production of on-line learning facilities and web based information management systems for cultural heritage. For this proposal Dr Sands main role will be to provide access to and standardise a sample of UCD digital landscape assets (aerial imagery) and to test and access the WebGIS pilot for use within academic research.

Keiron Goucher (Margaret Gowan & Co.):

As head of IT and GIS at one of Ireland’s leading archaeological consultancies, Keiron Goucher has 16 years experience in the handling and management of spatial archaeological data from a wide range of archaeological settings. For this proposal Keiron Goucher main role will be to provide access to and standardise a sample of Margaret Gowen & Co archaeological landscape data (geophysics) and to test and access the WebGIS pilot for use within commercial sector. Impact

The positive impacts of participating within the SHARE I.T. project include:

  • An improved understanding of the quality and range of landscape data being created and held within Irish archaeology.
  • An improved knowledge of the metadata standards and long term preservation policies for digital landscape assets.
  • Practical experience in developing web-based dissemination tools for spatial landscape archaeological data.
  • Developing a wider network of digital content providers.
  • Raise the awareness of digital landscape data to the wider Irish archaeological community
  • Promoting access to digital landscape data to the wider archaeological research community within a coherent and managed framework.
  • Providing an enhanced teaching resource for students.
  • Maximise the knowledge return from investment made in digital landscape assets
